Blues Scales

Blues scales are the 5 notes of the minor pentatonic scale, plus one additional note. The note added is the diminished 5th from the scale tonic. In relation to the major scale, the blues scale notes used are 1, flatted 3, 4, flatted 5, 5, flatted 7, and the 1 again an octave higher to complete the scale. Blues scales are used to improvise in jazz/blues.
