Instrument Families
There are four separate groups of instruments into which instruments are divided: string, woodwind, brass, and percussion.
Strings
Any of very many musical instruments in which taught strings are plucked, bowed or struck in order to produce a sound. Some stringed instruments are: guitar, bass, violin, viola, cello, harp.
Woodwinds
Instruments in which sound is produced by blowing against an edge or by vibrating a thin piece of wood or metal known as the reed, and in which the pitch is governed by the resonant frequencies of an enclosed air column. Some woodwind instruments are: saxophone, clarinet, oboe, flute.
Brass
Instruments whose tones are produced by vibration of the lips as the player blows into a mouth piece (or tubular resonator). Some brass instruments are: trumpet, french horn, tuba, trombone.
Percussion
Any object which produces a sound by being hit with an implement, shaken, rubbed, scraped, or by any other action which sets the object into vibration. This technically makes the piano, although is uses strings, a percussion instrument. Some percussion instruments are: drums, bells, triangle, wood blocks, piano.
